What Are Julia’s Friday Freebies And How Does It Work?

Every week, another free resource – one of my patterns, or another useful knitting resource – is available for free download. The free pattern (or resource) is made available on Fridays (sometimes Saturdays … or even later) and available for 24 hours after publication.

After the weekend, the download of the week is no longer available. Patterns and resources might appear as Friday Freebies again – or they won’t so make sure you don’t miss them!

Thank you for Friday Freebies and your wonderful patterns and tutorials. I love your work and when I am in search of a new project, I always look through my Julia Riede folder first. My computer hard drive died a few months ago, and, of course, I didn’t have everything backed up. If it wasn’t for your patterns and books being in my Ravelry library I would have lost them all. Phew! Catastrophe averted 🙂 BTW, There was no inconvenience from the Friday Freebie not downloading. You have always been quick to fix any issues, and this one was no different. Thank you again for sharing your beautiful patterns.

Thank you so much for making The Pretender shawl available for free! It’s so beautiful! I’ve downloaded it and glanced at the pattern and now deciding the color to make it in. By the way, I purchased your “Still in the Waiting Room” shawl book and I love it! It is fantastic! Thank you so much for everything you provide!

Julia, so sorry for your loss. Celebrate both your birthday and Steve’s memories this year. He was so young, but he left quickly. I’m 72, married 53 yrs, to an awesome man. Vietnam Veteran with Agent Orange. I watch him suffer and die a little more each day without a complaint. You and I are blessed to have had them both for a brief time. Celebrate with all you have.

This post just appeared on my Facebook feed. I missed it with the way Facebook puts the posts in whatever order they feel like I guess. In any event, I’m really sorry I missed his free pattern as I love the color red and the pattern is gorgeous. Unfortunately I cannot afford to purchase it either.

Julia, words cannot adequately convey how sorry I am to hear of your loss. You are a remarkable, strong woman and you are greatly appreciated.

  • My deepest condolences on the loss of Steve. This was such a terrible, sudden shock for you, and I’m grateful your family is with you. My only sibling died at just 57, also from a heart attack, and if it is any comfort to you at all, it helped me to remember his quick death was what we’d want for people we love even while extremely hard for those of us left behind. Take care of your own broken heart.

    Hi Julia,

First of all, congratulations on everything you have accomplished — you are such an inspiration!

I purchased the Vogue magazine, here in Vancouver Canada — I am thrilled for you to be recognized on the International Stage!

Thank You so much for the patterns you have shared — one of my favourites is “Ester” — I think I have knit it more than a dozen times — in different weights and colours — always fabulous!

    Best Wishes and Happy Fall!

    Hi Julia,

Just wanting to wish the best of luck with your medical exams that are coming up so fast now.

Have confidence in your abilities and if you ever would like to have a patient with multiple illnesses, I’m here for you. My current diagnosis is Primary Generalized Dystonia, Ehlers Danlos Syndrome, CRPS and a Secondary Generalized Dystonia due to the CRPS. I’m fully bedridden but still an avid knitter. It takes my mind of the pain and I have not been able to find a better painkiller yet.

All in all, the best of luck with your studies and exams! And thank you for all the wonderful information you give to the world of fiber-enthusiasts!

  • Hi!

I went to the Friday freebie listed on my email this week, but it isn’t available. I thought it was available for a week. Was I wrong? It is a shame, as my daughter’s name is Esther and I was thinking it would be a nice idea to knit her a shawl with her name!

Can I say that I do very much appreciate your Friday freebies – it is lovely of you to be so generous and thank you so much for them! 🙂

    • Thank you! The Friday Freebies post (the one with the link to the pattern) explains how it works: the pattern is free to download for 24 hours after I send out the weekly Friday Freebies email. Usually I send out the update Friday evening localtime (GTM+1) and reset the shop on Sunday.

Thanks for this lovely pattern … my scraps are queuing up wanting to be incorporated in one of these!
On the actual pattern, after casting on 3 sts and knitting 1 row, the pattern reads:
    Next row: sl1, YO, ktbl.
Next row: knit to last st, p1.
As this only accounts for 2 sts, should the pattern simply begin with the next 2 rows:
Next Row: sl1, YO, k to last st, ktbl.
Next Row: knit to last st, p1.
Thanks, Norma … aka mabear in New Zealand
